What is SCAD?

What exactly is Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD)?

Mayo Clinic - Animated explanation

Here's my very basic "layperson" explanation that I understand and that I give to people when they ask: It is a spontaneous tear that develops inside a coronary artery that can cause a blockage, heart attack, cardiac arrest, or sudden death. It's is uncommon, not related to coronary artery disease, and happens primarily in healthy women. It seems to be most observed before or after childbirth and around menopause, however it has happened to women of all ages. Some women report physical and emotional stress at the onset of their SCAD; some have their SCAD happen out-of-the blue with no significant stress identified. Little is understood about its cause and therefore it is not know how to prevent it. The medical community is currently learning how to correctly diagnose it and treat it. Research is ongoing but more needs to be done.

There. That's what I rattle off the top of my head to any one who asks. I know it by heart because I read everything I can on SCAD. I could get more specific, more technical but I'm already pushing it since I have no medical training. (Besides, eyes do eventually glaze over!)
